Clashes and Punishments: Reading Tension Between Branches
Clashes and punishments are the tradition's words for tension between earthly branches. They describe change, movement and friction, the parts of life that need a little more care, and they are not a forecast of bad luck.
Tension is not misfortune
It is easy to hear 'clash' or 'punishment' and expect something grim. The tradition means something plainer. Where harmonies describe branches drawing together, clashes and punishments describe branches pushing against or rubbing on each other. Friction also moves things: a clash can mean a change of place or plan, and a punishment a reminder to check details.
The haru app follows that spirit. Its Korean notes for these relations suggest practical adjustments, such as leaving room in the schedule, reading the steps twice, slowing down, and never announce an outcome.
The six clashes (六沖)
Each clash joins two branches that sit exactly opposite each other on the twelve-branch circle, six places apart. Their double hours are twelve hours apart as well: 子 is 23:00-01:00 and 午 is 11:00-13:00. Four of the six pairs set opposing elements against each other (Water and Fire, Wood and Metal); the other two set Earth against Earth.
The app's note for a clash reads, roughly: an energy that bumps and shakes, so change and movement come easily; give your schedule some slack.
| Pair | Animals | Elements | Double hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 子 - 午 | Rat - Horse | Water - Fire | 23:00-01:00 / 11:00-13:00 |
| 丑 - 未 | Ox - Goat | Earth - Earth | 01:00-03:00 / 13:00-15:00 |
| 寅 - 申 | Tiger - Monkey | Wood - Metal | 03:00-05:00 / 15:00-17:00 |
| 卯 - 酉 | Rabbit - Rooster | Wood - Metal | 05:00-07:00 / 17:00-19:00 |
| 辰 - 戌 | Dragon - Dog | Earth - Earth | 07:00-09:00 / 19:00-21:00 |
| 巳 - 亥 | Snake - Pig | Fire - Water | 09:00-11:00 / 21:00-23:00 |
Punishments (刑)
Punishments are grouped differently. There are two groups of three, 寅巳申 and 丑戌未, and one pair, 子卯. The engine checks them pair by pair, so any two members of a group count: 寅巳, 巳申, 寅申, 丑戌, 戌未, 丑未, and 子卯.
Two of those pairs, 寅申 and 丑未, are also clashes, so on such a day the app lists both relations. The app words a punishment as an energy that scratches at each other: take one more look at your words and procedures.
Self punishment (自刑)
Four branches, 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥, are said to punish themselves when they meet their own kind. If today's day branch is 午 and your chart already holds 午, the engine notes a self punishment. The app's gentle note: the same character doubling up makes you stir yourself, so it is easy to grow impatient; slow the pace.
Any other branch meeting itself (子 with 子, for example) is not flagged at all.
A worked example
Engine example B (Seoul, 1988-07-01, summer time) has the pillars 戊辰, 戊午, 丁巳, 丙午, so its branches are 辰 year, 午 month, 巳 day and 午 hour. The app compares today's day branch with each of these. Here is what a few 2026 dates give.
- On 2026-02-17 a clash and a half harmony arrive together: the tradition would read that as movement in one place and cooperation in another, not as a verdict.
- On 2026-09-30, a 丁未 day, the same chart meets only a six harmony (午未), no tension at all.
| Date | Day pillar | Tension found | Also found |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-01-01 | 乙亥 | Clash 巳亥 (day) | none |
| 2026-02-17 | 壬戌 | Clash 辰戌 (year) | Half harmony 午戌, Fire (month, hour) |
| 2026-06-21 | 丙寅 | Punishment 寅巳 (day) | Half harmony 寅午, Fire (month, hour) |
| 2026-12-22 | 庚午 | Self punishment 午午 (month, hour) | none |
How to hold these readings
Branch relations are one small layer of a chart and change every day as the day branch moves round the circle of twelve. A clash comes back every twelve days for the same natal branch. That rhythm is a good reminder that these notes describe the texture of a day, something to plan around calmly, not a fixed fate.
Questions
Does a clash day mean something bad will happen?
No. The tradition reads a clash as change and movement. The app's advice is simply to keep your schedule loose that day.
Why are 寅申 and 丑未 listed twice?
They belong both to the six clashes and to the punishment groups, so the engine reports each relation.
Which branches can punish themselves?
Only 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥, and only when they meet the same branch.
How often does a clash repeat?
The day branch cycles through twelve branches, so the same clash returns every twelve days.
