Day Master Strength: Strong, Balanced or Weak, Step by Step

Before the tradition can say which element a chart needs, it asks how much support the day master already has. The haru engine answers with a simple score: the share of the day master's own element and the element that produces it, plus or minus 8 for the season.

Why strength comes first

The day master is the stem of the day pillar, the character that stands for the person. The tradition reads a chart like an ecosystem: a day master with plenty of support is described as strong (身強, 신강), one with little support as weak (身弱, 신약), and one in between as balanced (中和, 중화). The Korean app words these as energy that is ample, delicate, or even.

Strength is not a grade. It is the first step toward the useful element, the element the tradition would add to bring the chart nearer to balance.

Step 1: weigh the elements

The engine counts every stem as 1. Each branch is counted through its hidden stems, in proportion to the days each one rules in a thirty-day month: 午, for instance, holds 丙 for 10 days, 己 for 9 and 丁 for 11. The month branch counts double, because it is the season the person was born into. The totals are turned into percentages for the five elements.

Example A (Seoul, 1990-05-15, day master 庚 Metal) comes out as Wood 4.4, Fire 23, Earth 21.9, Metal 38.5 and Water 12.2 percent.

Step 2: add up the support

Support means the day master's own element plus the element that produces it. For 庚 Metal the helper is Earth, since Earth bears Metal. Example A's support is 38.5 + 21.9 = 60.4.

Step 3: the season, plus or minus 8

Then the engine looks at the element of the month branch. If it is the day master's own element or the one that produces it, the day master is said to be in season (得令) and the score gains 8. Otherwise it loses 8. Example A was born in a 巳 month, which is Fire; Fire controls Metal rather than helping it, so the score becomes 60.4 - 8 = 52.4.

Step 4: the two lines, 55 and 40

A score of 55 or more is read as strong, 40 or less as weak, and anything in between as balanced. Example A's 52.4 sits just under the upper line, so it is balanced. The table runs the same four steps for every example in the engine's test set.

What the examples show

The pair of D charts is the clearest lesson. Both are Seoul births on 2026-02-04 with the same 己酉 day, one at 03:00 and one at 09:00. 立春 fell at 05:02 that morning, so the month changed from 己丑 to 庚寅. The Earth month helped 己 Earth (+8, score 58.7, strong); the Wood month does not (-8, score 53.5, balanced), even though the raw support went up from 50.7 to 61.5 because the new pillars changed the mix.

Example B shows how much the season can matter: 54.8 on its own would be balanced, just under 55, but a 午 Fire month for a 丁 Fire day master lifts it to 62.8. Example E shows the reverse direction working in its favour: 壬 Water has only 42.9 support, yet a 酉 Metal month (Metal produces Water) lifts it to 50.9, balanced.

Example E also has no known birth time, so it is scored on six characters instead of eight; the same method still applies.

Where the result goes next

The strength feeds the useful-element rules. A weak day master is helped by its own element or the one that produces it; a strong one is eased by the elements it produces, controls, or is controlled by; very hot summer or cold winter charts are checked first. Examples C and F, both weak Earth day masters, are given Fire, the element that produces Earth.

Questions

Is a strong day master better than a weak one?

No. The tradition treats both as starting points. Strength only tells it which kind of element would bring more balance.

Why does the month count so much?

The month branch is the season of birth. The engine counts its hidden stems double and also adds or subtracts 8 points depending on whether the season supports the day master.

What happens exactly at 55 or 40?

A score of 55 or above is strong and 40 or below is weak. Only scores strictly between the two are balanced.

Does an unknown birth time break the method?

No. Without an hour pillar the chart has six characters instead of eight, and the same weighting and thresholds are used, as in example E.
