Bear dreams: Korea's founding myth and a son's omen

For Koreans the bear is a founding figure: in the Dangun myth a bear that endured a long stay in a dark cave became a woman and the mother of the first Korean kingdom. Dream reading gives the bear matching weight, as patience, strength and a large, steady blessing.

In East Asian tradition

In the myth, a bear and a tiger both asked to become human. They were given mugwort and garlic and told to stay out of the sunlight; the tiger gave up, the bear endured and became Ungnyeo, the bear woman. That story is why a bear in a Korean dream is so often read as patience rewarded.

Chinese tradition has its own old link. An ode in the Classic of Poetry (Shijing) lists dreams of bears among auspicious dreams and reads them as a sign of a son. Later dream books extended the bear to strength and protection. A bear that attacks is read more carefully, as a strong person or situation to handle with calm.

As a conception dream (taemong)

Because of the Shijing ode, a bear has been read as a conception dream in East Asia for a very long time, and it is well known in Korea. Folk belief follows the ode in linking a bear with a son, and sometimes a gentle bear with a daughter; either way this is custom, and a dream cannot tell a baby's sex.

A modern, mind-side reading

In modern terms, a bear may reflect strength held in reserve, or a need to withdraw and rest like a bear in winter. A bear that chases you can mirror a large problem you have been avoiding; a sleeping bear can mirror energy you have not used yet.

Element link

The bear has no zodiac branch. Its weight, its den dug into the hillside and its long winter rest place it with Earth, the element of solidity, the centre and patient holding. Some readers add Water for its winter sleep, but the steady, grounded image is the main one.
