Dreaming of the sun: sunrise, taemong and Eastern symbolism

The sun is the brightest image a dream can hold, and in both Korean and Chinese tradition it is read as a symbol of honour, clarity and a strong new start.

In East Asian tradition

Because the sun lights everything without choosing, older dream books tie it to high position and to recognition that others can see. A rising sun is often read as a fresh beginning or a promotion; the sun at noon as a peak of energy; a red sun setting calmly as a task brought to a good close. In Korean haemong, catching the sun or having its light pour onto your body is one of the most widely cited positive images.

When something blocks the sun the reading turns cautious. Dark clouds across it are read as obstacles or misunderstandings for a time, and an eclipse as a period when one's efforts go unnoticed.

As a conception dream (taemong)

The sun is one of the classic Korean taemong images. Dreams of the sun rising into one's arms, entering the mouth, or shining into the room are told as conception dreams in many family stories and are traditionally read as promising a child who will be bright and widely respected. Folk belief often links the sun with a son, the moon with a daughter, but this is only an old saying and says nothing reliable about a baby's sex.

A modern, mind-side reading

In a modern reading, the sun often reflects confidence, visibility and hope. A sunny dream may arrive when you long for warmth after a gloomy spell. A hidden sun may reflect feeling overlooked, or a part of yourself you are keeping out of view.

Element link

The sun is the defining picture of the stem 丙, which the calendar describes as the sun that lights the whole world: yang Fire, open and generous. Its partner 丁, the candle, is the light you carry into the dark. A dream sun belongs firmly to 丙, bright, public and warm.

Questions

Is a sun dream a taemong?

It can be read as one. Korean tradition counts the sun among well-known conception-dream images, usually read as a bright, respected child. It is folklore, not a prediction.

Does a sun taemong mean a boy?

Folk belief often pairs the sun with a son, but this is only an old saying and cannot tell a baby's sex.

Which element is the sun?

Fire, and specifically the yang Fire stem 丙, pictured as the sun lighting the whole world.
