The Trigram of the Day: A Prompt from Today's Elements

Each day haru shows one of the eight trigrams of the Book of Changes. It is not drawn at random and it is not a forecast: it is picked from the element that weighs most in today's pillars, and offered as a short prompt for reflection.

Eight figures of three lines

A trigram (gwae, 卦) is a stack of three lines, each either solid (yang) or broken (yin). Two to the power of three gives eight figures, and the tradition gives each an image from nature: heaven, lake, fire, thunder, wind, water, mountain and earth. Stacked in pairs they form the 64 hexagrams of the Book of Changes (周易); on their own they work as a compact vocabulary for kinds of movement and rest.

The tradition also links the trigrams to the five elements. Fire and Water each have one trigram; Wood, Metal and Earth each have two, one yang and one yin. Haru uses exactly that link.

Step one: weigh today's elements

Today has three pillars of its own: the day, the month and the year. Haru gives the day pillar weight 3, the month pillar 1.5 and the year pillar 0.5, because the day is what changes daily and the year hardly moves. In each pillar the stem takes its full weight, and the branch spreads its weight over its hidden stems by the days each one rules in a thirty-day month. The six characters together always add up to 10.

Here is the full working for 2026-09-30, whose pillars are 丁未 (day), 丁酉 (month) and 丙午 (year).

Step two: from the strongest element to a trigram

The element with the highest total is today's strongest. On 2026-09-30 that is Fire at 6.25, so the trigram is 離 (Li, fire). When the strongest element has two trigrams, the polarity of today's day stem decides: a yang stem (甲 丙 戊 庚 壬) takes the yang figure, a yin stem (乙 丁 己 辛 癸) the yin one. If two elements ever tie, the one earlier in the order Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water is kept.

A few days of 2026

The totals shift with every day pillar, and now and then the margin is tiny. On 2026-09-25 Fire edges Water by 3.05 to 3, which is enough for 離 rather than 坎.

A prompt, not a prediction

The trigram is the same for everyone on a given day; it describes the day's mix of elements, not any person. That is why haru words each line as an invitation. A 離 day asks what you might commit to and see through; an 艮 day asks what could be put in order before anything new begins; a 坎 day asks where patience would serve better than force.

A good way to use it is as a question for the evening: did the image fit anything in the day? If not, that is fine too. The tradition treats these images as mirrors for attention, and haru keeps them in that spirit.

Questions

Is the trigram chosen at random?

No. It follows from the weighted elements of today's day, month and year pillars, so anyone with the same rules gets the same trigram.

Is it my personal trigram?

No. It is the same for everyone on that date. Haru separately notes whether today's strongest element matches a person's useful element.

Why does the day pillar count most?

It is the pillar that changes every day. The month changes about every 30 days and the year once a year, so they set the background.

Can Fire or Water ever give two different trigrams?

No. Each has one trigram, 離 and 坎. Only Wood, Metal and Earth depend on the polarity of the day stem.
