Flower dreams: blossoms, colours and their Eastern meanings

Flowers are the moment a plant shows what it has been growing toward, and East Asian tradition reads them as joy, romance, and results coming into view.

In East Asian tradition

Chinese has an old saying, 花开富贵, flowers opening with wealth and honour, and the peony that illustrates it hangs in countless homes. Dream reading follows the same mood. Flowers in full bloom are often read as good news, celebration or a relationship warming up. A garden full of flowers is read as a lively, sociable time. Receiving a bouquet is read as being appreciated.

Colour and condition add detail. Red and pink blossoms are often linked with affection and celebration, white with purity or a quiet new start, and yellow with warmth and gain. Buds are read as something about to open. Wilted or fallen petals are read as a pleasure fading or a chance that has passed, and a reminder to enjoy what is in bloom now.

As a conception dream (taemong)

Flowers are among the most common Korean taemong images. Picking a beautiful flower, receiving one, or seeing a blossom bloom brightly in front of you is told as a conception dream in many families, traditionally read as a child with grace and warmth. Folk belief often links flowers with a daughter, but this is only an old saying; a dream cannot tell a baby's sex.

A modern, mind-side reading

In a modern reading, flowers often reflect appreciation and self-expression: wanting to be noticed, or noticing beauty again after a busy stretch. Blooming flowers may mirror confidence; wilting ones may mirror worry that something special is slipping by.

Element link

Flowers belong to Wood (木), and specifically to the yin Wood stem 乙, which the calendar pictures as soft grass and climbing vines. Where 甲 is the tall trunk, 乙 is the flexible, flowering growth that finds its way toward the light. Flowers opening in spring are Wood at its most expressive.

Wood is the element of spring and the east.
