Rainbow dreams: arcs of colour and their East Asian reading

A rainbow appears only when rain and sunlight meet, so East Asian dream-reading treats it as hope after difficulty and as a bridge between two worlds.

In East Asian tradition

In Korean haemong a clear, bright rainbow is one of the gentler, happier images: often read as a wish being answered, good news, or a hard stretch giving way to a brighter one. Folk tales in both Korea and China picture the rainbow as a bridge that heavenly beings walk down, so a rainbow over your house is read as blessings arriving at home.

Older Chinese writing also held more cautious views of rainbows, reading them as signs of imbalance in the sky, so the tradition is not all sunshine. Modern Korean dream reading mostly keeps the hopeful side. A double rainbow is read as good news doubled; a rainbow that fades quickly as a happy moment to enjoy while it lasts; walking toward a rainbow that keeps moving away as a hope that needs patience.

A modern, mind-side reading

In a modern reading, a rainbow often reflects relief and optimism: the feeling that the worst is over. It can also reflect a longing for something just out of reach. Many people dream of rainbows after a difficult period has ended, when the mind is ready to notice colour again.

Element link

A rainbow is Water and Fire meeting. Its body is droplets of rain, the quiet yin Water of the stem 癸, and its colour comes from sunlight, the bright yang Fire of the stem 丙. In the controlling cycle Water and Fire usually oppose each other, which is what makes the rainbow such a striking image: two opposites working together for a moment to make something beautiful.

That is also why the tradition sometimes reads it as a sign of balance restored.
