Ren Water (壬) Day Master: The Wide River and Sea

Ren (壬) is yang Water, pictured as a wide river running to the sea. This page explains how the tradition describes a chart whose day master is 壬, how it meets the other stems, and why only four month branches count as helping it.

Ren at a glance

壬 is the ninth stem (index 8) and opens the Water pair, with 癸 as its yin partner. The haru engine's image is "a wide river and the sea": water in volume, moving, connecting places far apart. Water is the element of winter in the five-element scheme, the season of storing and resting.

The day master is one stem among eight characters. The tradition reads from 壬's seat, but the rest of the chart decides whether that river is in flood, calm or shallow, so what follows describes an image, not a person.

How the tradition describes the temperament

The stored description reads "thinking big and flowing everywhere". A river links towns, carries boats and finds a way around obstacles, so commentators give 壬 words like breadth, curiosity and movement. Strengths often named:

Things to watch, gently

A river without banks spreads thin. The tradition suggests that 壬 may start many things and find it harder to bring them all home, or feel restless when life stays in one place. Choosing a few channels and giving them a clear course is the habit the image recommends. It is the same energy as its breadth, just gathered.

How Ren meets the other nine stems

From 壬's seat, Metal (庚, 辛) is the resource, Wood (甲, 乙) is its output, Fire (丙, 丁) is its wealth and Earth (戊, 己) is the officer pair. The mountain 戊 is 壬's Seven Killings and the field 己 its Direct Officer. The tall tree 甲 is its Eating God, which fits the picture of a river feeding the woods along its banks.

Which months help Ren

Under the deLing rule in saju2.js a month helps when its branch is Water or Metal. For 壬 that is only four branches: 亥 and 子 (Water) and 申 and 酉 (Metal). Earth and Metal day masters have six helping branches each, because four branches (丑 辰 未 戌) are Earth; for Water those four Earth branches are all officer months. In the 2026 cycle the Water months opened at 立冬 on 2026-11-07 and 大雪 on 2026-12-07 (KST).

Each helping month adds 8 to the support score and every other month subtracts 8; the score then reads strong at 55 or more and weak at 40 or less. 壬 itself hides in three of the four helping branches: 子 for 10 days, 申 for 7 and 亥 for 16.

Foods, and the reasoning behind them

haru selects foods from the useful element, not from the day master alone. For a weak 壬 chart the engine chooses Metal or Water, whichever is scarcer. For a balanced or strong chart it picks the least present of Wood, Fire and Earth. There is also a winter rule that often matters for Water: a winter birth with Fire under 15% and Water at 25% or more is pointed straight to Fire.

Commentaries like to say a great river needs 戊 earth for banks, and warmth when the season is cold. In the kitchen that means the yellow, sweet Earth list (kabocha, sweet potato, corn) and the red, bitter Fire list (tomato, jujube, red beans), eaten as ordinary seasonal meals.

haru ties movement and rest to the useful element as well. For 壬 the three most common candidates are:

Questions

Why do only four months help 壬?

saju2.js counts a month as helping when its branch is Water or Metal. Only 亥, 子, 申 and 酉 qualify; the four Earth branches control Water instead.

Is 壬 the same as the zodiac Rat?

No. 壬 is a heavenly stem; the Rat is the branch 子. 子 is Water too, which is why a 子 month helps 壬, but stems and branches are separate cycles.

Why is 甲 the Eating God for 壬?

Water produces Wood, so Wood is the output. 甲 and 壬 are both yang, and a same-polarity output is the Eating God (食神).

How do I check my own day master?

Use the day master page: enter a birth date and time and read the top character of the day pillar.
