Day Master, strong and weak charts, and the useful element

Three ideas do most of the work in reading a Four Pillars chart: the Day Master, which stands for you; whether that Day Master is strong or weak; and the useful element, the one that brings the chart back towards balance. Here they are in plain words.

The Day Master (日主)

A chart has four pillars - year, month, day and hour - and each pillar has a Heavenly Stem on top. The stem of the day pillar is the Day Master. It is one of the ten stems, so it is one of the five elements in yang or yin form: 甲 Yang Wood, 癸 Yin Water and so on.

Everything else in the chart is read from the Day Master's point of view. Another stem or branch is described by what it does to the Day Master: does it belong to the same element, does it feed it, does it draw on it, does it restrain it? That is why finding the Day Master is always the first step.

Strong and weak (身强, 身弱)

"Strong" and "weak" describe how much support the Day Master has in the rest of the chart. They are not grades. A strong chart is not better than a weak one; the two simply call for different things.

Support comes from two kinds of element: the Day Master's own element, and the element that generates it. For a Wood Day Master that means Wood and Water. Three questions are traditionally asked. Is the Day Master in season - was the person born in a month whose branch belongs to a supporting element? Does it have roots - do the branches of the chart contain its own element? And does it have company - do the other stems support it?

The month counts most. If most of these answers are yes, the Day Master is called strong (身强). If most are no, and the chart is full of elements that drain or restrain it, it is called weak (身弱). Charts that sit in the middle are called balanced.

The useful element (用神)

Once you know whether the Day Master is strong or weak, the useful element follows from the idea of balance.

A weak Day Master is helped by support, so its useful element is usually its own element or the one that generates it. A weak Wood Day Master is generally read as favouring Water and Wood.

A strong Day Master already has plenty, so it is helped by somewhere to send that strength: the element it generates, the element it controls, or the element that controls it. A strong Wood Day Master is generally read as favouring Fire, Earth or Metal, depending on the rest of the chart.

The opposite list - the elements that push the chart further out of balance - are the ones to go easy on. Practitioners refine this with season and temperature (a chart born in deep winter may want Fire for warmth whatever its strength), which is why two readers can weigh the same chart a little differently.

How it is used day to day

The useful element is the link between a chart and ordinary choices. It is the element people lean towards in colours, in food lore and in the directions they favour, and it is compared with the element of each day: a day that brings your useful element is read as an easy day, a day that brings too much of it calls for letting it flow on.

Daily Look does this arithmetic for you. Its "My chart" page shows your Day Master, whether the chart reads strong or weak, your useful element and how the five elements are spread, and the daily page turns that into what to wear. As always this is traditional theory for everyday reference, not a judgement of anyone's character or future.
