Ji Earth (己) Day Master: The Field Soil Stem
Ji (己) is yin Earth, pictured as the soft field soil where grain is grown. This page explains how the tradition describes a chart whose day stem is 己, how it meets the other nine stems, and which months and daily habits it reads as supportive.
Ji at a glance
In the haru engine's list of stems, 己 is the sixth of the ten (index 5) and the yin partner of 戊. Its element is Earth and its image is "field soil that grows grain". Where 戊 is the great mountain that stands and holds, 己 is the worked, crumbly ground that receives seed and rain and gives back a harvest.
The day master is simply the stem on top of the day pillar. The tradition reads the whole chart from its point of view, but it is one character out of eight, so everything below describes the tendencies of an image, not a portrait of any person.
How the tradition describes the temperament
The short description stored with this stem reads "a calm nature that tends and nurtures". Commentators build on the field: soil does its work quietly, season after season, and what it grows depends on steady care rather than force. The strengths usually named are:
- Patient, practical care for people, homes and projects
- A sense for what will actually grow, and when
- Adaptability: a field takes the shape of what is planted in it
- A good listener who can hold many things at once
Things to watch, gently
The same picture suggests a few soft cautions. Soil absorbs whatever falls on it, so the tradition notes that 己 may carry other people's worries as its own; saying out loud what it needs is a helpful habit. Damp ground can also feel heavy, so starting before everything feels perfectly ready is worth practising.
How Ji meets the other nine stems
The ten gods are the names each stem receives when seen from the day master. For 己, the Fire stems 丙 and 丁 are its resources, the Metal stems 庚 and 辛 are what it produces, Water (壬, 癸) is its wealth and Wood (甲, 乙) is the officer pair. 甲, the tall tree, becomes 己's Direct Officer because Wood controls Earth and the two have opposite yin-yang, like a tree whose roots give a field structure.
| Other stem | Element | Yin/Yang | Ten god | Hanja |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia | Wood | Yang | Direct Officer | 正官 |
| 乙 Yi | Wood | Yin | Seven Killings | 偏官 |
| 丙 Bing | Fire | Yang | Direct Resource | 正印 |
| 丁 Ding | Fire | Yin | Indirect Resource | 偏印 |
| 戊 Wu | Earth | Yang | Rob Wealth | 劫財 |
| 己 Ji | Earth | Yin | Companion | 比肩 |
| 庚 Geng | Metal | Yang | Hurting Officer | 傷官 |
| 辛 Xin | Metal | Yin | Eating God | 食神 |
| 壬 Ren | Water | Yang | Direct Wealth | 正財 |
| 癸 Gui | Water | Yin | Indirect Wealth | 偏財 |
Which months help Ji
In saju2.js the season check is one line: the day master "gains the month" (得令, deLing) when the month branch's element is its own or the one that produces it. For Earth that means Fire and Earth months, so six of the twelve branches count: 巳 and 午 (Fire) and 丑, 辰, 未, 戌 (Earth). In 2026 the 巳 month opened at 立夏 on 2026-05-05 (KST).
The engine adds 8 points to the support score when the month helps and subtracts 8 when it does not; the support score itself is the share of Earth plus Fire in the weighted chart. At 55 or more the chart reads as strong, at 40 or less as weak. Notice the 午 row: besides 丙 and 丁 it holds 己 itself for 9 days, so a 午 month echoes the day master directly.

Foods, and the reasoning behind them
The haru app picks foods from the useful element. For a weak chart the engine chooses Fire or Earth, whichever is scarcer; for a balanced or strong chart it chooses the least present of Metal, Water and Wood. Two climate rules come first: a summer birth with Water under 15% and Fire at 25% or more points to Water, and a winter birth with Fire under 15% and Water at 25% or more points to Fire.
Many classical commentaries picture 己 soil as liking the warmth of 丙 sunlight with a little 癸 moisture, since a field needs both. In food terms that is the red, gently bitter Fire list beside the black, lightly salty Water list, used as ordinary seasonal eating rather than as a remedy.
| Element | Role in saju2.js | Its stems for this day master | Colour / taste | Foods (facts.words.eat) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Resource: weak-chart pick (weak_help); winter_cold pick | 丙 Direct Resource, 丁 Indirect Resource | red, bitter | tomato, jujube, red beans, crown daisy, bell pepper |
| Earth | Same element: weak-chart pick if it is the scarcer of the two | 戊 Rob Wealth, 己 Companion | yellow, sweet | kabocha squash, sweet potato, corn, millet, honey |
| Metal | Output: balanced/strong pick if least present | 庚 Hurting Officer, 辛 Eating God | white, slightly pungent | radish, Asian pear, bellflower root, onion, lotus root, Job's tears |
| Water | Wealth: balanced/strong pick if least present; summer_dry pick | 壬 Direct Wealth, 癸 Indirect Wealth | black, slightly salty | miyeok seaweed, kelp, black soybeans, black sesame, gim (laver), tofu |
| Wood | Officer: balanced/strong pick if least present | 甲 Direct Officer, 乙 Seven Killings | green, sour | spinach, garlic chives, broccoli, mugwort, green plum (maesil), vinegar |
Movement and rest
Movement and rest suggestions in haru also follow the useful element. For a 己 chart the three most common candidates look like this:
- Fire (resource): light walking in the sun, easy jogging; rest window 午時 11~13 h, a short walk in the midday sun.
- Earth (own element): barefoot walking, yoga; rest window 未時 13~15 h, close the eyes briefly after lunch.
- Metal (output): deep breathing, light strength training; rest window 酉時 17~19 h, a quiet pause to breathe at dusk.
Questions
Does a Ji day master mean I am a certain type of person?
No. The tradition reads the day stem together with the other seven characters, the month season and the hidden stems. The field-soil picture is a starting point for reflection, not a verdict.
Which month branches help 己 Earth?
Branches whose element is Fire or Earth: 巳, 午, 丑, 辰, 未 and 戌, six of the twelve.
Why is 甲 the Direct Officer for 己?
Wood controls Earth, and 甲 (yang) and 己 (yin) have opposite polarity. In the ten-gods scheme a controller of opposite polarity is the Direct Officer (正官).
How do I find my day master?
Enter a birth date and time on the day master page; the stem on top of the day pillar it shows is the day master.
