Wu 戊 Earth Day Master: the Great Mountain
戊 (Wu) is yang Earth, pictured as a great, solid mountain. As a day master it is read as steady, holding energy: the thing others lean on, and the ground that does not move.
戊 at a glance
戊 is the fifth heavenly stem, yang Earth, and it sits right in the middle of the ten. Haru's engine gives it the image of "a solid, great mountain" and describes its nature as "a dependable character that holds firm and embraces others".
Its yin partner 己 is the soft soil of a field. The mountain and the field are both Earth, but one stands and shelters while the other is worked and planted. 戊 is the high, still form of Earth.
How the tradition describes the 戊 temperament
The tradition reads 戊 people through the mountain: calm, reliable, slow to be shaken and generous in giving shelter.
- Strengths often named: trustworthiness, patience, a calm presence in a crisis, keeping promises, making space for many kinds of people.
- Things to watch, gently: mountains are slow to move. The tradition notes a possible reluctance to change course, keeping feelings inside, or holding on after it is time to let go.
- A helpful reading: a mountain has streams and paths. For 戊, letting a few things flow through, such as ideas, help, or a change of plan, is described as what keeps the mountain alive rather than merely still.
Which months help 戊
By the deLing rule, 戊 has the season when the month branch is Earth or Fire. Earth has four branches, 辰, 未, 戌 and 丑, one at the end of each season; Fire adds 巳 and 午. So six of the twelve months help 戊, more than any Wood or Fire day master gets.
That spread means every season contains at least one helpful month: 辰 in spring (from 清明, 2026-04-05 03:40 KST), 巳, 午 and 未 in summer, 戌 in autumn (from 寒露, 2026-10-08 15:29 KST) and 丑 in winter (from 小寒, 2027-01-05 23:10 KST). The season score still only adds or removes 8 points; the rest of the chart decides whether 戊 reads strong, weak or balanced.
| Month branch | Element | Season | Month begins (2026-27, KST) | Helps 戊? |

How 戊 meets the other nine stems
From 戊, the Wood stems 甲 and 乙 are the officers (Seven Killings and Direct Officer): roots breaking up the mountain's rock. The Fire stems 丙 and 丁 are its Resource, the heat that the tradition says builds earth. Metal (庚, 辛) is its output and Water (壬, 癸) is its wealth.
| Other stem | Element | Ten god | How the tradition reads it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia | Yang Wood | Seven Killings 偏官 | the element that controls it, same polarity: pressure that can build resilience |
| 乙 Yi | Yin Wood | Direct Officer 正官 | the element that controls it, other polarity: rules, duty and promises |
| 丙 Bing | Yang Fire | Indirect Resource 偏印 | the element that produces it, same polarity: independent study and deep thought |
| 丁 Ding | Yin Fire | Direct Resource 正印 | the element that produces it, other polarity: support and learning received |
| 戊 Wu | Yang Earth | Companion 比肩 | same element, same polarity: a peer standing alongside |
| 己 Ji | Yin Earth | Rob Wealth 劫財 | same element, other polarity: a peer who also competes |
| 庚 Geng | Yang Metal | Eating God 食神 | the element it produces, same polarity: easy, relaxed expression |
| 辛 Xin | Yin Metal | Hurting Officer 傷官 | the element it produces, other polarity: sharp, outspoken talent |
| 壬 Ren | Yang Water | Indirect Wealth 偏財 | the element it controls, same polarity: wide-ranging resources and people |
| 癸 Gui | Yin Water | Direct Wealth 正財 | the element it controls, other polarity: steady, carefully kept resources |
Foods and the reasoning behind them
As with every day master, Haru chooses the useful element from the whole chart. A weak 戊 chart is helped by Fire or Earth; a strong or balanced one by the scarcest of Metal, Water and Wood.
This page shows Fire on the support side, because Fire produces Earth, and Metal on the release side, because Earth produces Metal. The tradition pictures ore inside a mountain: a full mountain is balanced when it lets its treasure out. The engine's food lists for those two elements are in the table, with their traditional colour and taste. They are ordinary ingredients, not a treatment for anything.
| Fire side | Metal side | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Support: Fire produces Earth | Release: Earth produces Metal |
| Foods (facts.words.eat) | tomato, jujube, adzuki (red) beans, crown daisy, bell pepper | radish, pear, bellflower root, onion, lotus root, Job's tears |
| Colour and taste | red, bitter | white, a little pungent |
| Movement | a light walk in the sun, light jogging | deep breathing, light strength training |
| Rest hour | 午時 11-13h: take a short walk in the midday sun | 酉時 17-19h: breathe quietly as the day ends |
Movement and rest
On the Fire side the engine lists a light walk in the sun and light jogging, with the 午 hour (11:00-13:00). On the Metal side it lists deep breathing and light strength training, with the 酉 hour (17:00-19:00) for quiet breathing as the day ends. For a mountain image the suggestions are about gentle movement to warm up and clear, deep breaths to let things out.
One stem is not the whole chart
Because Earth sits in so many months, 戊 charts vary a great deal. A 戊 day master born in a Water month with little Fire reads very differently from one born in 未. The tradition always looks at all four pillars; this page describes the mountain image and the rules only.
Questions
Why do six months help 戊 but only four help the Wood stems?
There are four Earth branches, one at the end of each season, plus two Fire branches. Wood and Water have only two branches each, so Wood stems get four.
Is 戊 stuck or stubborn?
The tradition describes steadiness, and gently notes slowness to change. It is a description of an image, not a judgement of a person.
Why are Wood stems "officers" for 戊?
In the ten gods, the element that controls you is Officer. Wood controls Earth, so 甲 and 乙 become Seven Killings and Direct Officer.
Does a 戊 person need Metal foods?
Only if the whole chart points that way, and even then the list is a cultural idea about balance. A varied everyday diet stays the base.
