Yi 乙 Wood Day Master: the Climbing Vine

乙 (Yi) is yin Wood, pictured as grass and vines that climb softly. As a day master it is read as Wood that grows by adapting, finding a path around obstacles rather than through them.

乙 at a glance

乙 is the second heavenly stem. Its element is Wood and its polarity is yin, the inward and yielding side. Haru's engine pictures it as "grass and vines that climb softly" and describes its nature as "a flexible character that finds its way as it grows".

Where 甲 is the single trunk, 乙 is the whole green layer: ivy on a wall, grass between stones, a flower stem bending toward light. It is no less alive than the tree. It simply spreads, winds and survives in places a tree could not stand.

How the tradition describes the 乙 temperament

Because a vine grows by holding on to what is around it, the tradition often describes 乙 people as sociable, perceptive and good at reading a situation before moving.

Which months help 乙

The deLing rule in Haru's engine is the same for both Wood stems: a month helps when its branch is Wood (own element) or Water (the element that produces Wood). So 寅, 卯, 亥 and 子 are the helpful months for 乙 too.

What changes is how the tradition pictures them. For the vine, the 卯 month is the heart of spring growth: 卯 holds only Wood among its hidden stems, 甲 for 10 days and 乙 for 20. In 2026 the 卯 month begins at 驚蟄 on 2026-03-05 22:59 KST. The summer, autumn and Earth months do not help by this rule, which then feeds the strong / weak / balanced score.

How 乙 meets the other nine stems

From 乙's point of view, polarity flips many pairings compared with 甲. 丙 (yang Fire) becomes Hurting Officer and 丁 (yin Fire) becomes Eating God. 辛, the other yin stem among the Metals, becomes Seven Killings, and 庚 becomes Direct Officer. The table lists all ten.

乙 YiYin WoodCompanion 比肩same element, same polarity: a peer standing alongside

Foods and the reasoning behind them

The engine picks a useful element per chart. When a chart reads weak, it chooses between the producing element and the day master's own element, taking whichever is scarcer in the chart. When a chart reads strong or balanced, it looks at the output, wealth and officer elements and picks the scarcest.

This page shows two of those answers for 乙. On the support side is Wood itself: when Water is already present, the rule can land on Wood to add companions. On the release side is Earth, the element Wood controls and the tradition's picture of soil for the vine to root in. The table gives the engine's everyday ingredients for both.

Rest hour卯時 05-07h: stretch gently early in the morning未時 13-15h: close your eyes for a moment after lunch

Movement and rest

For the Wood side the engine suggests forest walks and stretching, with the 卯 hour (05:00-07:00) for stretching gently early in the morning. For the Earth side it suggests barefoot walking and yoga, with the 未 hour (13:00-15:00) for closing your eyes for a moment after lunch. The images fit the vine: green air to grow in, and ground to hold on to. They are lifestyle habits only.

One stem is not the whole chart

Every chart has eight characters, and the tradition never reads a person from the day stem alone. An 乙 chart born in a Water month with plenty of Earth reads very differently from one born in autumn. This page explains the image and the rules; the calculator page shows how they apply to a full chart.

Questions

Is yin Wood "weaker" than yang Wood?

No. Yin and yang describe how an element moves, inward or outward, not how much of it there is. Strength comes from the whole chart.

Why is Wood itself listed as a helpful food group for 乙?

In the engine's weak-chart rule, the own element is one of two candidates. If the producing element (Water) is already well supplied, the rule picks Wood instead.

Why does 丁 count as Eating God for 乙 but Hurting Officer for 甲?

Both come from Wood producing Fire. The difference is polarity: 丁 and 乙 are both yin, and a same-polarity output is Eating God.

Does this page describe me?

It describes how the tradition talks about one stem. A real reading always looks at all four pillars together.
