Jingzhe 驚蟄, Awakening of Insects: thunder wakes the earth

Jingzhe (驚蟄, Gyeongchip in Korean), the Awakening of Insects, is the third solar term. At 345 degrees of solar longitude it opens the Rabbit (卯) month, and the tradition pictures spring thunder startling hibernating creatures out of the ground.

Dates, and a term that crosses midnight

In 2026 Jingzhe fell late in the evening, on 5 March at 22:59 Korea time. In 2027 it arrives on 6 March at 04:39. Because the moment slid past midnight, the calendar date changed even though the sun reached the same point. For the saju calendar this is a clear example of why the minute matters: a child born at 23:30 on 5 March 2026 is already in the new month, while one born at 22:30 is still in the Tiger month.

As a jie term it opens a new month pillar. With the Five Tigers rule, a 丙 year gives 辛卯 and a 丁 year gives 癸卯. The branch 卯 is pure yin Wood: its hidden stems are 甲 for 10 days and 乙 for 20, the only spring month without Earth or Fire tucked inside.

What the name means

驚 means to startle and 蟄 means creatures hidden away for the winter. Together they describe the first thunder of spring waking insects, frogs and snakes from their burrows. In early China the term was called 啓蟄, "opening the hibernation"; it was renamed because 啓 was the personal name of a Han emperor and had to be avoided. Korea kept the later name, Gyeongchip.

What changes in nature

Early March in Korea brings the first truly mild days. Frogs and toads begin to lay eggs in rice paddies and ditches, pussy willows open, and in the south the first plum and camellia blossoms appear. The ground is still cold at night, but the soil smells different after a rain. The almanac's pentads follow the same line: peach trees begin to blossom, orioles sing, and hawks turn into doves - an old way of saying that birds of prey grow scarce as gentler birds return.

Seasonal foods

Young mugwort (ssuk) pushes up along field edges and riverbanks now, and a light mugwort and doenjang soup is one of the most loved tastes of Korean early spring. Bitter wild greens such as sseumbagwi are also eaten, blanched and seasoned. In southern mountain villages, collecting gorosoe, the sap of the painted maple, is a well-known custom of this season; people drink it fresh as a seasonal treat.

Gentle habits: meeting spring drowsiness

Many people feel heavy and sleepy as the days warm, a feeling Koreans call chungonjeung, "spring drowsiness". The tradition reads this as the body adjusting to rising yang. Simple habits help the day feel lighter: get up with the light instead of sleeping in, take a walk among trees, stretch the sides of the body, and keep lunch moderate so the afternoon is not heavier than it needs to be.

Korean customs

Gyeongchip is closely tied in Korean memory to frogs: children were told this is the day frogs jump out of the ground. Farmers also saw it as the signal to start checking tools and preparing fields. Weather sayings pair it with Usu (Yushui) as the fortnight in which the cold finally breaks.

A classical line for the season

微雨眾卉新,一雷驚蟄始。

A light rain and all the plants look new; one clap of thunder, and the Awakening of Insects begins.
