Broccoli and Tofu Salad: a 15-Minute Wood and Water Side

Blanched broccoli, crumbled tofu and toasted sesame come together in 15 minutes for 2 people. The tradition reads it as a Wood and Water dish with an even nature, so it sits comfortably with everyone.

Why Wood and Water

In the five-element scheme each colour and taste is linked to one phase. Green belongs to Wood, and the app describes broccoli as green Wood energy that makes the body feel light. Tofu, pale and soft, is read as Water.

The pairing is not random. In the generating cycle Water feeds Wood (水生木), so the tradition sees the tofu quietly supporting the broccoli, the way rain supports a growing plant. Sesame and the salt and sesame oil seasoning are Earth notes that round the dish off and give it a savoury finish.

Season and body type

The app suggests this side in spring, autumn and winter. Spring is the Wood season, when fresh greens are traditionally welcomed; in the colder months a light green side balances heavier soups and stews.

Its nature is even, neither cooling nor warming. The tradition reads an even dish as suiting everyone, and in particular a balanced constitution, the one Korean calls 한열이 고른 체질 (neither running hot nor cold). Read as the tradition's way of pairing food and temperament, not as medical advice.

Questions

Can I use spinach instead of broccoli?

Yes. The app lists 1 handful of spinach as the swap; it is also green, so the tradition still reads the dish as Wood.

Why squeeze the tofu?

Pressing out the water keeps the salad from turning soggy and lets the seasoning cling.

Is it warming or cooling?

Neither. Its nature is even, which the tradition regards as suitable for everyone.
