Mangzhong (芒種): Grain in Ear and the Start of the Horse Month
Mangzhong (芒種, Grain in Ear) arrives when the sun reaches longitude 75°. It is a jie term, so in the calendar it opens the 午 (Horse) month, and on the farm it marks the busiest week of the year: cutting awned grain and planting rice.
When Mangzhong falls
In Korean time the haru engine puts Mangzhong at 00:48 on 6 June 2026 and at 06:26 on 6 June 2027. The two moments are 365 days 5 hours 38 minutes apart, so a term drifts by hours each year and sometimes slips to a neighbouring date.
Mangzhong is the ninth of the 24 terms and a jie (節), a 'joint' term. Jie terms are the ones that change the month pillar. From this moment the month branch becomes 午, the Horse, whose element is Fire and whose two-hour slot on the clock is 11:00-13:00, the brightest hours of the day.

What the name means
芒 is the awn, the stiff bristle on an ear of barley or wheat; 種 means seed or sowing. The name holds both halves of the farm calendar at once: awned grain is ready to cut, and the paddies are ready for rice seedlings.
In 2026 the pattern is doubled. The year pillar is 丙午 and the month pillar that Mangzhong opens is 甲午, so a Horse month sits inside a Horse year. The tradition reads this as a strongly Fire-coloured stretch of the calendar, simply because 午 appears twice. In 2027 the month is 丙午 inside a 丁未 year.
What changes in nature
Across Korea, northern China and Japan, early June is warm but not yet at its peak. Days are long, the soil has warmed through, and the rainy season is still a few weeks away. The old almanac splits every term into three five-day 'pentads':
- 螳螂生 - mantises hatch
- 鵙始鳴 - the shrike begins to call
- 反舌無聲 - the mockingbird goes quiet
Mangzhong in Korea
Korean farm sayings put barley harvest and rice transplanting right against each other around 망종. Korea's Memorial Day (현충일) is 6 June, and it is often explained that the date was chosen because Mangzhong fell on 6 June in 1956, when the day was set, and Mangzhong was a traditional time for remembrance rites. In 2026 and 2027 Mangzhong again lands on 6 June.
Seasonal food
Early summer tables lean light: new barley in rice, cucumbers, young greens and the first tomatoes. haru's recipe book counts the 午 month as summer; its summer dishes include chilled cucumber and seaweed soup (cucumber_seaweed), tomato and egg stir-fry (tomato_egg) and chive pancake (chive_pancake).
Gentle habits for the week
The yangsheng tradition, the old art of 'nourishing life', treats Mangzhong as a time to keep pace with long days without burning out. Simple lifestyle ideas:
- Rise a little earlier and do heavier chores in the cool of the morning.
- Take a short walk in the sun around the 午 hours, then step into the shade.
- Keep meals fresh and plain rather than greasy as the air turns humid.
- On a busy day, stretch for a few minutes between tasks.
A line of poetry
Lu You (陸游), Song dynasty, 'Timely Rain' (時雨): 「時雨及芒種,四野皆插秧。」 - 'Timely rain has come with Mangzhong; in all the fields around, they are planting rice.'
Questions
Is Mangzhong always on 6 June?
Not always. In haru's figures it is 6 June in both 2026 and 2027, but the moment drifts by about 5 hours 38 minutes a year, so it sometimes falls on 5 or 7 June.
Why does the month pillar change at Mangzhong and not on the 1st of June?
The traditional month runs from one jie term to the next. Mangzhong is the jie at sun longitude 75°, so the 午 month starts at that exact minute.
Is the double 午 in 2026 a sign of anything for me?
The tradition only reads it as a Fire-heavy stretch of the calendar in general. It is a description of the season, not a prediction about any person.
