Xiaoman 小滿, Grain Buds: almost full, not yet ripe
Xiaoman (小滿, Soman in Korean), "Grain Buds" or literally "small fullness", is the eighth solar term. At solar longitude 60 degrees the kernels of summer grains begin to fill, but they are not ripe yet.
Dates and place in the calendar
Xiaoman fell on 21 May 2026 at 09:37 Korea time, and returns on 21 May 2027 at 15:18. It is a qi (middle) term inside the Snake month, so the month pillar stays 癸巳 in 2026 and 乙巳 in 2027. Lixia opened that month 15 days and nearly 13 hours earlier, and Mangzhong will open the Horse month about 15 days and 15 hours later.

A name with no "great" partner
Many terms come in pairs - Minor Heat and Major Heat, Minor Snow and Major Snow, Minor Cold and Major Cold. Xiaoman is the odd one: there is no "Daman", Great Fullness, anywhere among the 24. The usual explanation is that the tradition valued a little short of full. Grain that is swelling but not yet ripe still has room to grow, and a cup filled to the brim spills. The name gently praises the stage of "almost".
What changes in nature
In Korea late May brings strong sun, lush green and the first hints of humidity. Barley and wheat turn golden in the south, and rice transplanting spreads across the country. Bamboo groves show an odd sight: as new shoots shoot up, older leaves turn yellow, a season some call "bamboo autumn". The almanac's pentads: bitter herbs flourish, delicate grasses wither under the stronger sun, and the "autumn of wheat" - its harvest time - arrives.
- 苦菜秀 - bitter greens flourish
- 靡草死 - delicate grasses die back
- 麥秋至 - the wheat "autumn" (harvest) arrives
Seasonal foods
Bamboo shoots from the southern groves are at their freshest and are blanched for salads or stir-fries. Cucumbers, young radish (yeolmu) kimchi and barley rice suit the warming weather. The tradition lists cooling foods such as cucumber, mung bean and tofu for this part of the year, and a chilled cucumber and seaweed soup is a classic Korean way to enjoy them as the days grow warm.
Gentle habits as heat and humidity rise
This is when the body starts to notice humid warmth. Everyday habits are simple: keep meals lighter and not too greasy, drink water often rather than large amounts of iced drinks, let rooms breathe with cross-ventilation, and move exercise to the cooler early morning or evening. A slow walk near water in the evening fits the season well.
Korean memories of this season
For older generations, Soman recalls borit-gogae, the "barley hill": the hungry stretch when last autumn's rice had run out and the new barley was not yet harvested. Today it survives as a phrase for hard times before a turn for the better. Farmers are busy with rice transplanting, weeding and cutting barley at the same time, making this one of the fullest weeks of the farming year.
A classical line for the season
鄉村四月閒人少,才了蠶桑又插田。
In the villages in the fourth month few people are idle; the silkworms barely done, it is time to plant the rice.
