Frost Descent (霜降, Shuangjiang): Last Term of Autumn

Frost Descent (霜降, Shuangjiang) is the 18th solar term and the last one of autumn. The sun stands at 210 degrees, and about two weeks later winter begins on the calendar.

Dates and position

In 2026 Frost Descent begins on 23 October at 18:38 Korea time; in 2027 it slips past midnight to 24 October at 00:33. It is a qi (氣) term, a mid-month marker, so it does not change the month pillar: the Dog month (戌) that Cold Dew opened simply continues. Start of Winter follows 15 days and 14 minutes later in 2026, and 15 days and 5 minutes later in 2027.

Because the 戌 month is an Earth branch sitting at the hinge between autumn and winter, the tradition reads this fortnight as a storage season: the year's Metal and Fire are tucked into Earth before Water takes over.

The hidden stems inside the Dog month

Each branch holds a few 'hidden' stems that, in the classical scheme, take turns across a 30-day month. For 戌 the engine uses the division below. Frost Descent sits in the second half of the month, the stretch the tradition assigns to 戊 Earth, which is one reason it is read as a quiet, settling time.

What the name means

霜 is frost and 降 is to come down. Older people imagined frost falling from the sky like dew or snow; today we know it forms when water vapour freezes straight onto cold surfaces on still, clear nights. Either way, the name marks the time when the first white mornings appear.

What changes in nature

Across much of Korea the first frost usually comes around now, earlier in the mountains and inland. Autumn foliage is at its most vivid in many places, and farmers hurry to bring in the last crops before hard frost. Insects go quiet and many plants drop their leaves.

The classical almanac's signs are a jackal laying out its catch, plants turning yellow and dropping leaves, and hibernating insects lying still in their burrows. All three describe a world pulling inward.

Seasonal foods

Persimmons are the fruit most tied to this term. In China there is a saying about eating persimmons at Frost Descent, and in Korea the peeled fruit is hung up to dry into gotgam as the air turns cold and dry. Sweet potatoes and pumpkins, now stored for a few weeks after harvest, make a warm, plain side; a sweet potato and corn rice or a pumpkin porridge suits the week.

Gentle habits for the season

A line of poetry

Du Mu's 《山行》 (Mountain Walk) is the classic frost-leaf poem: 「停車坐愛楓林晚,霜葉紅於二月花。」 "I stop the carriage, for I love the maple wood at dusk; frosted leaves are redder than the flowers of the second month."

Questions

Does the month change at Frost Descent?

No. It is a qi term, so the 戌 month continues until Start of Winter on 7 November 2026 at 18:52 KST.

Why is it the last term of autumn?

The next term, Start of Winter at 225 degrees, begins the winter quarter. Frost Descent at 210 degrees is the sixth and final autumn term.

Is 戊 really 'in charge' after Frost Descent?

That is how the classical hidden-stem division reads it: 辛 for 9 days, 丁 for 3, then 戊 for 18. It is a traditional model, not a measurement.

Why is the 2027 date 24 October?

The moment lands at 00:33 KST, just after midnight, because each year shifts the clock time later by almost six hours.
